VICTORIA FALLS TOWN, ZIMBABWE

Vic Falls Town

Downtown Vic FallsVictoria Falls is the adventure tourist mecca of Africa - often referred to as the "adrenaline capital of Africa." You can't walk half a block without a "tout" asking you if you want to bungi or abseil or gorge swing or white-river raft. Prices are EXTREMELY high - obviously for all the adventure sports but also for food. My hamburger, fries, and water at the local Wimpy Burger was 43,000 Zim dollars (about $8). Yikes!

Walking around downtown you are bound to run into Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, Warthogs, and an occassional Elephant closer to the falls themselves. Wimpy BurgerYou are also going to run into a bunch of guys that want to "help you" change money. Don't do it! Used to be you could get a good deal but they are cracking down hard on it and it's not recommended. You'll also run into alot of "artists" that will try to sell (or trade) you soapstone rhinos or people. They claim that they've just worked hard carving this 'one of a kind' piece. Uh you'll see them all over, not only in Zimbabwe but in Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa too. If 'artist' means that they unpacked it and wiped off the packing material residue then, yes, you'll meet alot of artists downtown.

At the market you can barter anything - ANYTHING - for curios, so bring extra tshirts, baseball caps, bandanas, pens, etc. As you walk through the streets, the vendors are yelling "I like your shirt" "I like your bandana" "I like your shoes" trying to get you to trade. Shirts or caps with your local team's logo are a hit - they loved my "It's not just football... it's Raiders football" shirt!

Vic Falls BackpackersAfter flying from Cape Town to Vic Falls, we checked into the Victoria Falls Backpackers hostel. It's a cute little village of thatched roof rooms, open lounge, and big fire pit. It kind of had that Gilligan's Island feel and had the adorable resident Rottweiler, Ebu. Pierre, who recently started working there, is very cool and can book anything for you at a reduced "hostel" price. We stayed in a twin room for $10 per person per night. It's about a 15 minute walk into town. Vic Falls Backpackers has a self-catering kitchen or you can get take-away delivered from The Kodfather. You could order the same pizza for 40,000 Zim each night and get different toppings each time.
