One of the 'Seven Wonders of the World,' Victoria Falls are a mile wide and drop 300-350 feet. Vic Falls are shared between Zambia and neighbouring Zimbabwe. The explorer David Livingstone named them after Queen Victoria when he first gazed upon them in 1855. Locals call them Mosi-Oa-Tunya (‘the smoke that thunders’) after the spray that can be seen miles away. At the height of the rainy season, 9 million litres per second pours into Bakota Gorge.
Visiting the Zimbabwe side of the falls will cost you $20. You won't be able to get as close as when you visit from the Zambia side - but the falls from any side are amazing. The entrance to the Zim side of the falls is down the road from the downtown area. You can follow the main street down or take one of the paths. There's a dodgy path that cuts through the park - though if you take it be mindful of muggings, baboons, and aggressive 'salesmen.' We walked back from Zambia taking this path as a shortcut and were glad when we made it through without incident.
There's another path at the back of the posh Victoria Falls Hotel that's fun to take. Ask the guard at the entrance of the hotel's driveway how to get to the falls entrance. He'll point you through a gate, around the hotel, and to a private path. Thinking you are a hotel guest, an employee will meet you at the top of the path and accompany you down to the entrance. He will shield you (ha ha) from wild animals and salesmen. The one we talked to said that some guests had been attacked by elephants and warthogs - and ever since settling a few lawsuits, they assigned employees to work the path.
