ZAMBIA

General Info

Map of Zambia

I spent a quick 2 days in Zambia going to Victoria Falls and the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park from Zimbabwe.

The territory of Northern Rhodesia was administered by the South Africa Company from 1891 until it was taken over by the UK in 1923. During the 1920s and 1930s, advances in mining spurred development and immigration. The name was changed to Zambia upon independence in 1964.

One fifth of Zambia is covered by national parks and game reserves, where the wildlife lives in relative anonymity thanks to very few people going on safari here. Only nine of the 19 national parks can be visited, making Zambia a hugely untapped safari destination. Zambia is about the size of Texas.

Zambia's population is estimated at 10,462,436 and English is the official language. Independence Day is October 24, 1964 and major exports include copper (55%), cobalt, electricity, tobacco, flowers, and cotton. Currency is the Zambian Kwacha which is divided into 100 Ngwee.
