CAPE POINT, SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Point

Cape Point LighthouseAfter Cape of Good Hope, we drove to Cape Point with the baboon warning in our minds. It was already 4:30 pm so we only had 30 minutes to look around and get lunch (park closes at 5pm). So we decided to take the funicular up instead of hiking. This time, really, we weren't being lazy just pressed for time. The funicular was 31 Rand (@ $5) for adult return ticket and takes 10 minutes. At the top there are a bunch of stairs to the top of Cape Point - where the lighthouse resides. The views were gorgeous from the top!

View from Cape PointWe headed back down to the funicular station and tried to catch the funicular down. But we were the only ones there and it won't leave until it is filled so we had to hang out at the gift shop for a while. By the time we got back down it was too late to eat at the restaurant so we went to the snack bar. Still hadn't seen any baboons so I was beginning to think that the stories were a bit exaggerated. Ha ha ha silly me!

View from Cape PointSo we had just paid for our sandwiches when THEY came. Three baboons - one a huge male - came out of nowhere and stopped about 5 feet from us. A man at a table in front of us took off and left his 10 year old son sitting at the table with food and the baboons. Trifling! At the same time, Lisa took a step forward and placed her sandwich on the table while I took 2 steps back and threw my sandwich back behind the snack counter. The big male baboon knocked over the kids drink and then swiped Lisa's sandwich. He then jumped up to the roof of the snack bar and ate her sandwich while watching us. It was hella funny! The cashier at the snack bar told me that no one had ever thrown their food back at her. I explained that I was just sooo hungry since I hadn't eated since breakfast. Ha ha ha. Lisa had to buy another sandwich and we got back in the van to eat.
