MASAI MARA, KENYA

Masai Mara

On Saturday, we left for Masai Mara at 9:30am with our 2 Masai guides/driver (Kioss and Sadera) and 2 Brits. We drove 4 hours to a town called Narok. It was a beautiful drive through Masai country! Every few minutes we saw a Masai herding his cows or goats and I was thinking that I am one of the luckiest people on the planet! The road was pretty good until about 2 hours out of Nairobi - then it was full of potholes that Sadera had to navigate carefully.

Narok

We stopped in Narok and had lunch - cabbage, stew, and mashed potato - yummy! Then we drove another hour to Acacia Campsite outside of Masai Mara National Reserve. We booked this through the hostel - so it was supposed to be budget camping but it was soooo nice! We arrived at the campsite and there were beds and night tables in the tents with decks and deck chairs. The campsite also had a BAR. Yipee! We dropped off our packs in the tents and then went on an evening drive through the park.

Acacia CampsiteThe Masai Mara Reserve is located west of the Rift Valley and is a natural extension of the Serengeti plains, in Tanzania. It was named for the Maasai tribespeople (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and the Mara River. The Mara River runs north to south heading unto Lake Victoria, through the Tanzanian park. This course is the natural barrier crossed every year by the large migratory herds of wildebeests and zebras which march across the two parks. More than one million wildebeests and 200,000 zebras move in a quest for the best pastures, finding along the way the crocodile-crowded river. When the herds ford the stream, many animals die flattened or drowned and leave their bones by the Mara banks.

Masai Mara

ZebraWe saw lions, tons of zebra and giraffe, my favorite warthogs, vervet monkeys, elephants, and various antelope.

The scenery was beautiful! Right when we passed some lions, the radiator started overheating. Sadera said, "NEEcole, can you check under the hood, please?" I said, "Hell no I'm not getting out of this truck!" So he hopped out and dealt with the radiator. We had a few truck issues throughout the trip but nothing too serious.

GiraffeWe got back to camp about 7pm and Sammy (our cook from Nairobi, not Masai) had prepared dinner for us - it was delicious! After dinner, of course the Brits and I headed to the bar for a few Tuskers.

Kioss and Sadera joined us and we bought them a round. They told us about their families and Masai customs. Sadera was telling us that he was married but wanted another wife - his current wife was about 50-50 about the idea. We were laughing and drinking until about 11pm - then we went back to our tents to sleep.
