Italy is located in Southern Europe, a "boot-shaped" peninsula extending into the central Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Tunisia. The independent countries of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within Italian territory, while Campione d'Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. Italy is approximately 90% Roman Catholic, with the rest being Protestant, Jewish, and a growing Muslim immigrant community.
