DUBLIN (CONT.), IRELAND
I guess I should have been keeping a journal on this trip because I can't remember where the heck we went to eat in Temple Bar. I can't remember which pubs we drank at either - but that reason is pretty obvious! I remember that there were lots of SLAINTEs (exclamation used as a toast before drinking meaning to your health or something like that)! I just LOVE Guinness here (it's soooo much better than bottles at home) and the local lager Smithwick's is delicious! Yum!!!!! Anyway, the Temple Bar area is the artsy nightlife area of Dublin. Pubs, clubs, and restaurants line the narrow, cobble-stone streets running between the Bank of Ireland and Christ Church Cathedral. It's a fun area but also gets pretty obnoxious. We stepped over no less than 4 fresh piles of puke on our way home. Disgusting!
Since I was in Dublin, I also went to see a few U2 sites. I couldn't help myself! I'm a super super freak geek U2 fan and I just had to (If you are too, here are my photos/video clips from their 2005 Oakland concerts)!
Actually, I went to another U2 site while in Dublin. U2 played their fan-favorite 1989 New Year's concert at the The Point Depot Theatre. Well, coincidentally Kanye West was playing their while I was in Dublin. I found out when I was still in the states, so I bought a ticket through Tickermaster and had it sent to box office. I got a general admission floor ticket for €60.45 (geez! more expensive then my U2 tickets!) and wasn't quite sure what to expect. I took a cab from my hostel to The Point on Friday night (2/24/06) and picked up my ticket about an hour before the show. When I got into the theater, I went straight to the floor to try to get a good spot. I was about half way back but had a good view of the stage, as there weren't too many tall people on the floor. As the concert got underway I was quite impressed with the Irish fans. They knew every single word to every song! Half the time Kanye just let the crowd sing/rap. They were a much better crowd than when I saw Kanye open up for Usher in Oakland. Who knew?? Kanye actually put on a very entertaining show and he was backed by a full orchestra (who during a Kanye costume change played The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony and the crowd - including me - went crazy!). They also played Eurythmic's 'Sweat Dreams' during a costume change and Kanye did his 'white dance' to Aha's 'Take on Me'. I just love it when different genres of music come together! Anyway, it was a great night!
