DOOLIN, IRELAND

Doolin

Doolin

Doolin is a small seaside village on the northwest coast of County Clare. Set against the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by the spectacular bare limestone landscape of the Burren, Doolin is gorgeous! Settled between the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the Aran islands, Doolin is known as the 'traditional music capital of Ireland'.

Doolin

We arrived in Doolin about 1:30pm and went straight to O'Connor's Pub. Yipee! Me and the two guys were definitely ready for another pint! O'Connors PubSo we went in and got a table and a menu. I sat with the 2 guys since the women from the states were vegetarians and didn't drink alcohol. Boring! Ah shoot I shouldn't say that. OK I take that back! Anyway, the 3 of us ordered Irish Stew for €9.50 and Guinness. Our food and drink came in 5 minutes and we were happy campers! The Irish Stew was delicious!!!! There was so much meat that I barely had room for my Guinness (which is a meal in itself!). But of course I had to finish it and another pint for dessert. Humm that's 5 pints before 2:00pm. Geez! I better get with it!

Doonagore CastleWe didn't have much time in Doolin but spent about 30 minutes before we left in the music store listening to traditional music. I bought a Russell brothers CD and we went to a few of the other shops to get more souveniers. What the heck am I going to get my students? No Guinness stuff. Aran sweaters?

Doolin was such a cute village that I was sad I didn't have more time there! It would be a great place to go for a week, listen to music every night at the pub and rent a bike to expore the coast during the days. Maybe I'll return someday!

We left the main street in Doolin and then drove to nearby Doonagore Castle.

Doolin was firmly put onto the global map of irish traditional music thanks to the three Russell brothers; Packie, Gussy and Miko.

They learned their musical talent from their mother Annie and then as young men from older traditional musicians in the area and so inherited the distinctive style and sound peculiar to Clare.
