DERRY (CONT.), IRELAND

After we walked around Free Derry corner area taking pictures, Ruairi walked us to the Bloody Sunday Museum and we ended the tour. It was only £4 each, so we gave him £20 since he was such an entertaining guide. In the Bloody Sunday Museum, we looked at the exhibits while listening to the real walkie-talkie transmissions (Ok there is probably a proper term for those but you get what I mean) from that day. It was eerie and made me mad all over again! The brother of a victim worked at the museum (Shoot! I can't remember his name!) and we spent a while talking to him about that day and about the movies that had come out depicting the events. He told us about the plans to expand the museum into a Free Derry Museum which sounded fantastic! We bought loads of books and posters from the museum. We asked him about a good place for lunch and he showed us on the map a few possibilities.

So we left the bogside in search of a place to eat. The first one we came to was called the River Inn (Derry's oldest bar on Shipquay Street), so we went downstairs and sat down for lunch. It was only about 12:30, so we were the only ones down there but still received fantastic service from the waitress and the bartender! Lisa and I ordered pints of Smithwick's. Yum!!! I ordered a sandwich, I think. Geez! I'm such a bum for not keeping a journal for this trip! I will defnitely keep one for my summer 06 trip! Anyway, we were going to rush back to Derry so we could go to Falls Road again but decided to take our time in Derry and change our flight to Glasgow, so we could have an extra day in Belfast. Lisa went upstairs to change our flights and to call our buddy Patrick to see if he would take us to Falls Road again on our way to the airport. I went up to the bar to get my 3rd pint of Smithwick's and the bartendar said, "So you like it eh?" I replied, "Ahhh! It's lovely!" So he gave me a pint glass. My first one from Ireland - from the city of my people! Yeah!

We left the pub after a while of drinking and chatting and went to the Derry Visitor Center. We were told that they had Bogside Mural Posters there, so we went to investigate. Luckily, they had a poster of my favorite mural, the boy in the gas mask! We all bought souveniers and then went to the nearby mall to look around. It then started POURING rain, so we walked a block and ducked into a pub. Oh yea, it had been 45 minutes since my last Smithwick's, so it was time for another one! After about 20 minutes, the rain hadn't let up. So we decided to head to the train station and catch the 4:55pm train back to Belfast. The bartendar called a cab for us and we were off. This time the train didn't seem as cold and it was a nice ride, scenic ride!
