THE BURREN, IRELAND
From Doolin, we drove to the Burren (pronounced 'burn'). It was gorgeous! The entire coastline in this area was treeless, limestone rock. We had just passed green farms and hills and then came to the Burren. Wow! It was like going back in time or going to the moon. The views along coast were amazing! We also saw the "famine walls" zig zagging across the hills. The walls were built of black stone imposed by the British landlords to break the Irish spirit during the potato famine. We stopped for a while and wandered out along the coastline. The Burren is south of Galway in County Clare, Ireland. The name Burren is from the Irish bhoireann meaning a stony place. Its formation has lain unspoiled since the ice-age and is composed of karstic limestone, the largest area of such in western Europe. The Burren is bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and Galway Bay and is in the north-west corner of Clare. It has some of the finest archaeological megalithic tombs in Ireland, with relics of human habitation dating back almost 6000 years.
