CHOBE SAFARI DRIVE, BOTSWANA
After the Chobe River cruise, we had a buffet lunch at the swanky Chobe Safari Lodge. It was the first and last time we were going to eat at a swanky lodge, so we took advantage and went back a couple times through the buffet line. The salad and steamed veggies were delicious - it was the first time we had had good veggies in a week. The fish and roast beef was also good but I didn't care for the Kudu pie because they added Kudu liver to it as well.
After lunch, another guide picked us up from the lodge for our 3-hour game drive through Chobe National Park. We were in search of Africa's Big 5 - referring to five of Africa's greatest wild animals: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. We had already seen buffalo, rhinos, and elephants during the boat cruise, so we just needed to see the cats to complete our Big 5 viewing.
Chobe National Park is the second largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566 square kilometres. The park is divided into four distinctly different eco systems: Serondela with its lush plains and dense forests in the Chobe River area in the extreme north-east The Savuti Marsh in the west about fifty kilometres north of Mababe gate; The Linyanti Swamps in the north-west And the dry hinterland in between. Game viewing is at its best during the dry season April to October, when the majority of natural pans have dried up.
