GUATEMALA
I went to Guatemala as part of my Belize trip. Unfortunately I was only able to see the Tikal/Flores area. Guatemala is the northernmost country in Central America. It borders Mexico, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador and the Caribbean. It has the second biggest coral reef in the world on the east coast and volcanic sand beaches bordering the Pacific Ocean on the west coast. Guatemala covers a territory of 42,042 square miles (108,889 square kilometers). Sixty percent of Guatemalans speak Spanish and 40% speak Amerindian languages. There are 23 officially recognized Amerindian languages including Quiche, Cakchiquel, Kekchi, Mam, Garifuna, and Xinca. There are approximately 13,909,384 people in Guatemala. About 75% of them live below the poverty line. Guatemala has moderate climate throughout the year in most of the country. The average temperature is a nice 75F degrees. Guatemala has tropical low rain forest (Petén), mountain cloud forests, volcanoes, highland lakes, volcanic beaches, and coral beaches. What else could you want in a country? |
Recommended Guide Book: FACTS & TIDBITS Independence Day (from Spain) is September 15th (1821). The agricultural sector accounts for about one-fourth of GDP, two-thirds of exports, and half of the labor force. Coffee, sugar, and bananas are the main products. Guatemala's exports include coffee, sugar, bananas, fruits and vegetables, cardamom, meat, apparel, petroleum, and electricity. |
