ISLA DE LA FLORES, GUATEMALA
Isla de la Flores is a beautiful island in the middle of Lake Peten. It has cobblestone streets and the buildings are painted in pastels. It's 45 minutes by road from Tikal National Park.

We stayed at La Casa del Lacandon which was on the edge with a beautiful view of the lake. The price was included in our tour but I believe it was about $15 US per night. The hotel was OK for one night - we supposedly had the honeymoon suite which had 4 beds and 2 fans. Hummm - not sure that made sense! The bathrooms were sparkling clean, but the beds were a bit on the scary side. Prior to our trip, a number of travelers told us not to go to Flores as they said they hated it and there was nothing to do. We, on the other hand, found it a nice addition to our itinerary and did some good shopping in town. It is actually a more middle-class town (which did not appeal to some tourists we talked to because it wasn't 'poor' enough to 'genuine.' - whatever!). The next morning we went on the deck of our hotel for a beautiful view of Lake Peten. We were chuckling at some kids driving a motor boat in circles over and over and over. Then we went shopping and got some great buys on tapestries and crafts and I bought a cool machete. |
