AMBERGRIS CAYE, BELIZE
Ambergris Caye is the largest caye along the Belizean coast. There is a small channel that separates it from the Yucatan mainland of Mexico. Interestingly, "ambergris" is a waxy substance that is found floating in or around the shores of tropical oceans. The substance originates in the intestines of Sperm Whales and is used to make perfume. Don't know why that is interesting - just made me say "humm" when I heard it.
San Pedro is the only town on Ambergris Caye and is quite different from Caye Caulker. I noticed many more tourists here than in other parts of Belize - however, I don't know if that was the norm or not. The prices were higher at restaurants, hotels, and at the gift shops and there were many more upscale hotels. The coastline/pier area was very pretty, cleaner (it seemed) than Caye Caulker and had a lot to offer divers and snorkelers. We took the Caye Caulker water taxi to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye at 8:30am. The ride took about 30 minutes. We then walked around looking for a place to eat breakfast. We stopped and ate breakfast and then walked around looking at the gift shops along Barrier Reef Drive and Pescador Drive. After shopping and seeing the sights, we decided to go back to Caye Caulker on the 11:30am taxi.
